MAN Diesel & Turbo works well with LNG
MAN Diesel & Turbo will provide a complete propulsion package and a fuel gas system for the world’s first LNG propelled fishing vessel. This is a newly constructed 86 meter ship (with purse seines) called “Libas“. The Cemre Shipyard in Istanbul is responsible for the construction.
The main engine, a dual-fuel MAN 6L51/60DF, is the heart of the ship. It successfully passed its type approval test (TAT) at the end of 2017, when a nine-cylinder test engine provided 1,150 kilowatts per cylinder at 500/514 rpm. The 6L51/60DF can be both the main engine or an auxiliary one. On the test bench, it has worked both with fuel oil (DMA) and with natural gas. The equipment also includes a Renk transmission system and the MAN Alpha propeller propulsion system. The LNG gas supply is possible thanks to the 350 m3 MAN cryo tank. The tank stores the gas at the lowest possible temperature and pressure until it evaporates and is supplied to the engine. Liegruppen, the Norwegian fishing group, ordered the ship, while compatriot Salt Ship Design provided the project.

LNG, the key of the energetic transition in the maritime industry
Conscious of the maritime energy transition, the company is betting on the use of natural gas as fuels for global maritime transport. Indeed, this could prove to be the most promising way to support the goal of a climate-neutral shipbuilding industry. Wayne Jones, Chief Sales Officer of MAN Diesel & Turbo, has expressed confidence in the project. «This is a pioneering project. At MAN, we are convinced that low-emission gas fuels are the silver bullet to decarbonizing the shipping industry. We have made it our mission to guide our customers through this transition». From 2016, the year of the launch of the initiative, MAN has already received a significant consensus among industrialists and politicians.
Holistic approach
Customers benefit from a portfolio of industry-leading solutions and products that contribute to this fuel change. In this regard, even Lex Nijsen, head of the Four-Stroke Marine of MAN Diesel & Turbo, spoke about the goal. «This is a very noteworthy win. Our ability to provide this efficient, low-emission, proven LNG-fuelled propulsion package – a world’s first for this environmentally sensitive segment – really puts our credentials as a systems supplier on display». Always according to Nijsen’s words, MAN’s approach to supply is holistic. «This includes new builds as much as retrofits of existing vessels. In 2017 MAN has retrofitted the world’s first container vessel to LNG and more projects are being realized as we speak».
