Cummins made the move from Darlington to Birmingham for Euro Bus Expo. Whether by train or by bus, we may never know – but it hardly matters. What counts is that Cummins powers both modes of public transport with cutting-edge engine technology.

What is Cummins doing at Birmingham’s Euro Bus Expo?

At the recent IAA in Hanover, we met Felipe Rocha and Brian Wilson from Cummins. We report, in brief, on the technology manifesto, which applies to both onroad and offhighway. “Now with full powertrain capability, Cummins and Accelera by Cummins can optimise engines, transmissions, axles, e-axles, motors, and inverters to enhance overall system efficiency. While it’s hard to pinpoint one component, developing much more of the powertrain allows us to optimize the full system for our customers, based on their specific needs.” At Busworld Turkye the star was hydrogen applied to the ICE. Rated at 216 kW and with 1200 Nm peak torque, the B6.7H provides diesel-like performance using zero-carbon hydrogen fuel for intercity/coach applications in the 9-12m range.  Also the X15H was on display, with power ratings from 298-395 kW and peak torque of 2600 Nm.

At the Cummins stand at Euro Bus Expo, we witnessed the relaunch of the internal combustion engine, including the original diesel versions. While city bus tenders are increasingly focused on electric solutions, Cummins showcased two powerful diesel engines: the B4.5 Euro VI, delivering up to 157 kW and 849 Nm, and the L9 Euro VI, with a remarkable 298 kW and 1700 Nm of torque. Also on display was the Accelera Next Gen 1CS2016 Traction System, a cutting-edge direct-drive motor that delivers continuous power of up to 230 kW and peak torque reaching 3000 Nm.
