DCN and Milan, an association of words that essentially expresses two concepts and two phenomena, which are, moreover, interconnected: Data Centre Nation (DCN) and about 1.5 GW to be installed in the next few years, simply in the metropolitan area. Let’s start with the second one, preliminary to placing DCN in context.

CyrusOne and the second Data Centre in Milan

It is recent news that CyrusOn has begun building its second data centre in Milan. The Dallas-based company, which is active with some sixty data centres, has called the erecting site for the storage and management of digital data MIL2. CyrusOne MIL1 will be developed on an area of 74,866 square metres in the municipality of Segrate, near Linate Airport. The facility will initially provide 27 MW of IT capacity on 9,000 square metres of world-class technical space within a single three-floors building with a total of three 9 MW data rooms. As for MIL2, there will be 18,000 square metres of technical space on three floors for an IT capacity of 54 MW distributed with a total of six 9 MW data rooms.

DCN Milan 2025

And that’s nothing compared to what we saw at DCN Milan 2025, substantially tripled, compared to the 2024 edition. A crucial nerve for the DC sector in Italy and Southern Europe with the participation of 3,000 industry leaders (it was about 1900 in 2024), 157 Sponsors (against 107 in 2024) and over 50 working sessions. About these, we mention Munters: “During our panel on data center cooling challenges, we addressed key topics such as the increase in rack density and the need for design flexibility, energy efficiency measurement methods, the future of air- and liquid-cooling technologies, as well as the role of district heating in Italy.”

DCN Milan

Among the players who exhibited ad DCN Milan, we noticed that Fincantieri has lined up an attacking trio that sees Isotta Fraschini Motori covering ICEs, Power4Future for batteries, and Fincantieri SI as system integrator. Among the many engines and batteries players there are ABB, Baudouin, which launched a 60 MVA unit at MEE in Dubai, CGT, the Caterpillar Italian dealer, Cummins and Rolls-Royce Power Systems, which brings both the traditional diesel series and the Kinetic powerpack to the table for this specific stationary application.
