SMM, the house of workboats
SMM Hamburg is the workboats home. 2200 exhibitors attend the event in Hamburg. ICE leads also the transition, it depends on the fuel
If in the port of Hamburg one not only breathes the air of the northern European seas, one breathes the essence of world shipping, a little further on, at Hamburger Messe, the SMM is the port of call for all the workboats technologies. Around 2,200 exhibitors. What else?
Workboats and engines, a promise of love renewed at SMM
One trend that we immediately picked up on is the certainty that, at these latitudes of application, the internal combustion engine cannot be dispensed with. If anything, players in the sector are questioning which fuel to use. The most popular are methanol, LNG and ammonia. As Denise Kurtulus, Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, pointed out at the press conference, “Rolls-Royce remains an ICE company. The problem is not the engine itself, it is what burns inside the engine.”
Fresh faces in Hamburg. Starting from Baudouin
The French engine manufacturer continues to unleash launches and presentations. It enriched its marine engine family (platforms often shared with power generation family) with the M33.3 series, including 6 and 16 cylinders models. Of the three engines for workboats unveiled at SMM, we mention the 16M33, a 16-cylinder long-stroke (BxS 150×185 mm), with a total displacement of 52.3 litres. Even on such a giant, it is the common rail that controls operations, assisted by a high-pressure pump and two-stage turbocharger. In heavy-duty mode, maximum power reaches 1,545 kW (2100 hp) at 1800 rpm and a torque of 9500 Nm at 1200 rpm, 1434 kW at 1800 rpm in continuous mode.
Scania shows off Diesel of the year
The 13-litre Super-derived, as the truck engine has been christened, will remain Diesel of the year in charge until November. Its marinized version appeared in Hamburg. The 13-litre new marine propulsion engine has a power range of 257-772 kW (350-1050 HP) and an auxiliary range of 301-553 kW: subject to duty ratings, emission standards and rated speed. Scania’s engineering has optimised the injection and adapted the entire architecture (thus starting with the turbocharger) according to performance. The 13-litre is thus fitted to match the right torque and power curve profile. “After the successful introduction of the new platform for trucks, buses and industrial applications, it is time to expand our offering to marine industries,” says Fredrik Järild, Head of Sales Power Solutions.

And…
There is so much to say, so we refer you to the next posts and to reading the article in the November issue, also online. Rolls-Royce Power Systems with the 1163 and 8000 series available with SCR and HVO. Volvo Penta exhibited IPS professional platform, the hybrid-electric package, D8 IMO Tier III and D13. FPT Industrial emphazised the fixed-speed G-Drive proposal for auxiliary applications, with the C16 on the launch ramp. Cummins showed the QSK60, able to deliver from 2000 to 2700 hp. AS Labruna with the RE150 marine generator, based on the N67 450N. The RE150 is designed to run in parallel with fuel cells and battery packs. Twin Disc celebrated the acquisition of Katsa, a Finnish-based manufacturer of gears and power transmission components. After appearing at Mets, Seawork and the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, it is now time for the QS Seamaster by SAIM Marine in Hamburg. Finally, we reviewed enginemakers typically found among commercial applications, such as ABC and Bukh.
