Yanmar has chosen to join forces with two other Japanese companies to accelerate on the path to decarbonization. Another Japanese company, Toyota, is investigating the marine applications of hydrogen.

Yanmar and decarbonization: HyEng

Three of Japan’s leading marine engine manufacturers, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd., and Japan Engine Corporation have concluded a joint venture contract for combined investment, and today announced the joint establishment of a new company HyEng Corporation

With a view to contributing to decarbonization in Japan, and promoting development of shipbuilding and maritime industry, the three companies have completed an agreement to facilitate joint investment in establishing a new company, HyEng Corporation, which will pursue joint development of world-leading marine hydrogen-fueled engines. This announcement was shared at the “Zero Emission Ships” seminar held by The Nippon Foundation in May 2021.

Focusing on marine domain

With the establishment of HyEng Corporation, the three companies will further advance their joint development activities and accelerate their drive to develop new markets for decarbonization in the marine domain. Kawasaki Heavy Industries will develop medium-speed 4-stroke engines, Yanmar Power Technology will focus on medium- and high-speed 4-stroke engines, and Japan Engine Corporation will embark on the development of low-speed 2-stroke engines. All three simultaneous developments will enhance the product lineup of propulsion and auxiliary (generator) engines for a wide range of vessels. In addition, a hydrogen fuel storage and supply system will be developed as part of the integrated hydrogen fuel system. By developing advanced hydrogen marine engine technologies based on the distinctive engines and quickly launching in the market, the consortium will contribute to the Japanese shipbuilding industry. Furthermore, the companies aim to revitalize the Japanese maritime industry and realize a sustainable society by promoting the uptake of hydrogen fueled engine technology for marine vessels.

HyEng overview

HyEng Corporation is based in Japan, on the premises of Japan Engine Corporation HQ factory. The new goals are the development of hydrogen engine and international standards and rules for hydrogen fuel supply systems. The company will also oriented to the integration of hydrogen fuel supply systems as well as maintenance and operation of hydrogen fuel engine demonstration facilities.
