The sixth edition of Biogas Italy 2020, scheduled in Milan on March 5 and 6, will provide an overview about the prospects of biogas in Italy. To date, in fact, 86 percent of goods travel by road and transport accounts for about 24 percent of total emissions. In Italy, the fleet is among the oldest in Europe, however it is estimated that a complete renewal of the fleet of industrial vehicles on road might reduce CO2 emissions by 58 million tons.

BIOGAS ITALY 2019

Such an opportunity is restrained by the difficulty of LNG (liquefied natural gas) supply, since only a few of the 58 LNG distributors on the whole national territory are ensuring the distribution, against a total supply demand of around 100 thousand tons per year.

Overview of a biogas production plant

A boost to the production of biogas in Italy

According to Piero Gattoni, president of CIB (Consorzio Italiano Biogas), «the news that our member farms are planning to build 20 biomethane liquefaction plants, some already authorized and others in the process of being authorized, has quite a strategic value and further affirmation of the circular economy model».

The 20 authorized plants will produce liquid renewable gas using agricultural waste or second-harvest crops. The first agricultural bio-LNG plant will come into operation in spring 2020. Italy, therefore, will be able to offer the 2,500 vehicles currently present in the company’s fleets a green and sustainable alternative to import.

Renewable resources from agriculture

«It is necessary – added Mr Gattoni – to develop a credible option that is environmentally sustainable and, at the same time, may allow us to increase competitiveness. Soon, Italy will be able to overcome supply bottlenecks thanks to the contribution of renewable resources from our agriculture, a strategic asset for transport de-carbonization».

These and other topics will be discussed at the sixth edition of Biogas Italy.
