Founded in 2019 in the UK, Carnot Engines promises to be disruptive in the internal combustion engine field. How? By the continuous reseach on game-changing ceramic power units capable to halve fuel consumption and reduce CO2 output down to zero. The start-up has started a crowdfunding campaign via the Crowdcube platform back in September and was able to raise so far (December 7th) slightly more than 275,000 pounds.
Greater efficiency, lower TCO
Let’s read from the official website of the company: «The off-grid energy and long-haul transport sectors, unregulated until the last decade, must be net zero by 2050. Battery technology is unsuitable due to cost and weight. Hydrogen technology is considered to be the only viable solution to decarbonising these sectors. Carnot power units will have greater efficiency, lower total cost of ownership and greater range, reliability and durability than fuel cells. They are the key to unlocking a hydrogen future while minimising the impact to supply chains».
And again, more specifically: «Modern Internal Combustion Engines typically waste a third of fuel energy to cooling systems, which prevent metal components from melting, and therefore have efficiencies of only 35 percent. Carnot power units are designed with key components manufactured from advanced ceramics which can withstand these high temperatures. This eliminates the need for a cooling system and results in half the fuel use. With efficiencies of 70 percent, clean Carnot power units are the best solution to unlocking a net zero hydrogen future for large/long-haul applications».
The words spoken by Carnot Engines’ CEO
Carnot’s CEO, Archie Watts-Farmer said, «We’re a young business, but our progress has been stratospheric. Our fundraise is all about maintaining that momentum and extending our belief that Carnot’s technology is of its time and answers three profound problems at a stroke – how to spare the planet yet more carbon emissions, how to reduce the cost of power and how to democratise and share affordable energy in parts of the world that have been denied access to its benefits for too long. This next step is critical to that vision».
