Conexpo 2020: How many stars under the Nevada sky!

Conexpo 2020
Conexpo 2020: Total registered attendance reached over 130,000

Conexpo 2020: it’s time to take stock of what happened in Vegas. We have already reported on the issues relating to Covid19. Cummins and Volvo Penta withdrew their employees, leaving product on display. A general warning that led the organizers of SaMoTer (the CE exhibition scheduled in Verona, Italy) to postpone the event until October. This does not prevent us from reporting the echoes of what the exhibitors showcased in recent days in Nevada.

CONEXPO AND COVID19: WHO’S WHO

In the wake of the previous edition, engine manufacturers made pyrotechnic announcements again at Conexpo 2020, designed to revolutionize the industrial engine scenario and offer OEMs a significant enrichment of available solutions. The main novelties are signed by FPT Industrial, Kubota and John Deere. Of each of them we report only a brief passage, referring you to the link of their respective posts.

FPT Industrial: F28, Diesel of the year 2020, is available also in the hybrid version.

KUBOTA: My name is S7509 and I’m the 7.5 liters from Osaka.

JOHN DEERE: Rising the bar till 650 kW. The 18L is born.

About these trio we also point out the presence in the FPT booth of Cursor X, F34, Cursor 9 Power Pack and N67 NG, which powers the Project Tetra, the Case Construction Equipment wheel loader. Kubota’s Micro-Hybrid System provides power assistance instantaneously during peak overloads to the engine providing an additional electrical power boost of up to 10 kW. In addition, Kubota Engine America launched its service mobile application. John Deere exhibited also 4.5L, 13.6L and electronic solutions: displays, Smart Connectors and MTG 4G LTE communication components; the PD400 and PD280 power inverters.

Perkins replied the Bauma Munich and Agritechnica approach, with the debut of its brand-new second-generation hybrid-electric concept. «Perkins is focused on delivering more choice and increasing value to our customers. The four hybrid concepts we’re showcasing are examples of future technologies that will take machine efficiency to the next level» says Tom Nankervis, electrification marketing manager. «With our range of hybrid engines, customers can choose to downsize their engine and use the hybrid power for peak-load, or they can reduce output from the diesel engine, choosing to lower fuel consumption up to 20 percent.» Beside the hybrids on display 403J-11T,  904J-E36TA, 1204J-E44TTA, 1706J-E93TA and 2806J-E18TTA.

U.S. buyer attendance increased 8 percent from the 2017 show, and total buyer attendance improved by almost 5 percent

Deutz. That’s how it is written, but you can read E-Deutz, who dressed as the protagonist at the stand in Cologne. The all-electric JLG telescopic handler concept G5-18A was developed in collaboration with JLG. The compact 360 volt drive system uses a split drive comprising two 40 kW electric motors – one for driving and one for the hydraulics in the telescopic arm. As is typical for electric engines, the system delivers instant torque, making the machine even more dynamic. The battery is from the E- Deutz modular toolbox and offers 42 kWh of capacity. The 6.6 kW charging system can restore the battery charge to 80 percent within four hours.

‘CONEXPO: WHAT’S NEW?’ WE WROTE

But the German surprises don’t end here. We had anticipated the ultra-compact hybrid solution by Deutz, designed specifically for use in aerial working platforms for low-load applications. The Deutz D 1.2 hybrid engine combines a highly compact three-cylinder diesel engine with a capacity of 1.2 liters and a 48 volt electric motor. A battery system developed in collaboration with Futavis, which is now ready for pilot production, will be another highlight at the exhibition.

Hatz. Even the small engine specialists got their fill of news. For the first time E1 technology, officially announced at Bauma 2019, was displayed at the American market. The leading model with E1 technology, the 1D90E delivering 11 kW , is one of the most powerful single-cylinder diesels in the world. The Hatz 1B50E, 1B30E and its sibling model with a vertically aligned crankshaft, the 1B30VE, cover the power ranges up to 8 kilowatts and 5 kilowatts respectively. Also power-pack: The compact 18.4 kilowatt pack rounds off the lower end of the H Series range of engines. With 130 Nm, the 3H50T engine has the highest torque in its class on the market and achieves EPA tier 4 final standards in the USA and EU Stage V without any exhaust emission after-treatment. Last, but not least, an interactive user interface developed by Hatz, which is used in conjunction with mixed-reality-compatible devices such as glasses or tablets. «Particularly in the case of maintenance, technicians are expected to have engine-specific instructions with them, to be able to carry out the maintenance job» explains Maren Hellwig, specialist in the Internet of Things at Motorenfabrik Hatz.
