SMM Hamburg 2018, power to the hybrid
Drum roll for Rolls-Royce Power Systems that has played the cards of the hybrid and 4.0. Hybrid, a solution that has not yet truly convinced everyone, held in the grip of the champions of the diesel as irreducible frontier of commercial propulsion and the proponents of the full electric whatever it takes.
Starting from 2020, the one that should revolutionize the OEM approach to fuel consumption and, consequently, the regulation of CO2 emitted into atmosphere. Mtu will propose the diesel-electric formula in the range between 1,000 and 4,000 kilowatts. Performance values refer to the overall power of the hybrid package and embrace both the 2000 series and the Friedrichshafen 4000 series. The architecture is conventional, in parallel, with the integrationof lithium ion batteries and electric motors.
But there is no need to wait idly for 2020. The launch of the Sailing Yacht A dates back to 2017, which, with a 143-meter hull, does not know rivals at least among sailing vessels. Here the combined power is 16 MW and allows a maximum speed of 21 knots.
Nova Hybrid is a 50-meter yacht from the Dutch Heesen shipyard, equipped with two 1,200 kW 12V2000 M61s, associated with 220 kW of electricity. Incat Crowther chose a pair of 10V2000M72, in cooperation with Zf transmission and ABB electric motors, to navigate in a manner compatible with the waters of the Gordon River, in the Tasmania protected area.
About Marine Service 4.0, at SMM Hamburg 2018 Mtu has staged a special multitasking division, with 80 employees. This is how Jürgen Winterholler, head of the new digital solutions area, stated: «Information security and data protection have a top priority. This is a field in which we also benefit from the experience gained over the last 20 years by Rolls-Royce in the aerospace industry».
Man & Imo Tier III at SMM Hamburg
At SMM Hamburg 2018 Man Engines presented the Imo Tier III – Epa Tier 4 recipe. Masterpiece of system is obviously the SCR module. Two are the news on which Man relies to overcome distrust of shipyards and shipowners about the invasive cylinder of catalytic converter: compactness, not to occupy space under deck, and minimizing maintenance times. Another plus is the consumption of urea that, according to official data of the manufacturer, are now reduced by 8% compared to the previous version.
What about ZF?
The wind of the hybrid is still blowing on the shores of Lake Constance. Conceived for huge volumes and large-scale uses, ZF’s hybrid transmission uses permanent magnet motors with integrated planetary systems, from 600 to about 11,500 kilowatts. The application methods are those of the official literature: pure electric, parallel, additional torque regulator (boost mode), or generator for the hotel services on board the ship. An additional power take-off (PTI) is applied to the propeller shaft either by the electric or tandem motor alone.
