North America is set to lead the global ammonia industry capacity additions with a share of 37% by 2030 by gaining capacity from new-build and expansion projects between 2023 and 2030, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Ammonia Capacity And Capital Expenditure Outlook By Region, Countries, Companies, Feedstock, Projects And Forecast To 2030,” reveals that the total ammonia capacity of new-build and expansion projects in North America is expected to be 26.39 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2030. The increasing demand for ammonia-based fertilizers from the agriculture sector is driving the growth of the ammonia industry in North America. The rising adoption of green ammonia as a clean and renewable energy resource is another key factor.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “For the upcoming new build projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 26.25 mtpa from 18 planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing ammonia projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.14 mtpa from one announced project.”

The US is the key country in North America in terms of ammonia capacity additions. The main capacity addition in the US will be from an announced project, Ascension Clean Energy Donaldsonville Ammonia Plant, with a capacity of 7.20 mtpa. It is expected to commence production of ammonia in 2027.

Nivedita concludes: “In North America, Canada stands next in terms of ammonia capacity additions. The main capacity will be from an announced project, Inter Pipeline Petronas and Itochu Corp Alberta Ammonia Plant, with a capacity of 1 mtpa. It is expected to come online in 2027.”
