Mtu engines from Rolls-Royce deliver the power for the innovative modular “Boxer tracked” vehicle concept that Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) presented at the Eurosatory defence technology trade fair (13 to 17 June 2022 in Paris).

“Boxer tracked” is the basis for a completely new family of tracked vehicles that can be equipped with the mission modules of the proven Boxer wheeled vehicles. The aim of the in-house development was to develop a highly flexible, reliable, cost-effective and rapidly available solution for the requirements of NATO and other allied armed forces.

In doing so, KMW builds on proven mtu technology for the drive system: the demonstrator, shown for the first time at Eurosatory, is powered by an mtu Series 880 engine, which has proven itself many times over in vehicles of the German armed forces and allies. A more powerful version of the engine will later power production vehicles. The successful Boxer vehicle family, whose mission modules are to be used in the “Boxer tracked”, is also powered by mtu engines.

Paul Röck, Director Sales Governmental at Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems, said: “Boxer tracked is a very well thought-out and promising project that can only work with a drive system that is as powerful as it is reliable and easy to maintain. With our proven mtu Series 880 engines, whose power density represents the benchmark in their power range, we deliver exactly that. But this is only the beginning. We are currently developing a more powerful version of the engine for Boxer tracked, which will be suitable for all possible vehicle variants and further developments and will offer customers a high degree of future security. The performance-enhanced engine will also be excellently suited for use with a hybrid drive.”

With its mtu products, Power Systems has been a solution partner for the German and allied armed forces for drive, propulsion and energy supply for many years. The company is currently transforming into a provider of integrated sustainable solutions. In the future, climate-friendly products – such as engines for use with sustainable fuels, hybrid drive systems and emission-free fuel cells for stationary power generation – will also play an increasing role in the governmental business.
