Forestal del Atlántico is transforming its operations, working with Bergen Engines to achieve a near-negative carbon footprint. Since 1977, Forestal has been manufacturing glues and resins in the Ferrol estuary along Spain’s Atlantic coast, supplying essential products to the wood industry.
At the heart of this transformation are Bergen Engines’ 12MW B36:45V20 co-generation gas engines, pivotal to Forestal del Atlántico’s ambitious Triskelion project, which combines advanced carbon capture technology and synthesising methanol using green hydrogen produced on-site.
This green hydrogen not only fuels methanol production but could also be blended to power the gas engines themselves, further reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
This approach replaces fuel oil engines with cleaner, natural gas-powered systems, cutting CO₂ emissions and supporting Forestal’s sustainability goals. The revamped plant will supply essential heat for resin and melamine paper production, provide electricity for factory operations and feed surplus power into the grid.
When fully operational in 2027, the plant is expected to produce approximately 40,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually. In the process, it will capture and utilise around 56,000 tonnes of CO₂, positioning Forestal del Atlántico at the forefront of sustainable industrial practices.
Andrés Fuentes, Managing Director of Forestal del Atlántico, highlighted the company’s forward-thinking approach: “We are transforming from a traditional industry to one with a near-negative carbon footprint. This investment reflects our vision to lead the renewable energy sector, demonstrating our commitment to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.”
Carlos Prieto, Managing Director of Bergen Engines Ibérica, underlined the partnership’s significance: “We are proud to support this pivotal project, showcasing our role in Spain’s new cogeneration investment cycle. Beyond providing state-of-the-art equipment, our maintenance agreement ensures safe and efficient operation for years to come.”
